MICD Endorses Elissa Slotkin for Senate

Lansing, Michigan | August 24st, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --

On Saturday, August 24th, the Michigan College Democrats officially endorsed Representative Elissa Slotkin for Senate. Her political journey started with a fight against healthcare price gouging that impacted her family. Since then, she has championed solutions to the cost of living crisis by taking on Big Pharma, capping insulin prices, and advocating for Medicare price negotiations, while steadfastly defending women's rights and LGBTQ+ protections. Her work deeply resonates with college students striving to secure health insurance and reproductive care.

As Michigan college students, we recognize the need for well-paying union jobs to strengthen our communities and secure meaningful work for the youth—something Rep. Slotkin has championed through her investments in infrastructure and technology to fuel equitable economic growth.

We also know the critical need for gun reform. Many of us and our friends have faced the horrors of gun violence and mass shootings. Slotkin has consistently prioritized gun reform, as shown by her 2023 bills crafted after the Oxford High School shootings, developed with input from survivors. We need her in the Senate to safeguard us from gun violence. She embodies the new generation of leaders college students need, bringing fresh perspectives and engaging across party lines with a commitment to transparency and accountability.

This is a must-win, high-stakes battle against former Republican Congressman Mike Rogers, a pivotal race for safeguarding the U.S. Senate. Rep. Slotkin has a proven record of winning tight races, particularly by engaging with rural Republican communities on issues that directly impact their livelihoods and families. Now, we must mobilize college students to vote and ensure her victory.
