The MFCD denounces Ottawa County’s decision to become a “Constitutional County”

Michigan Federation of College Democrats denounces the Ottawa County Commission on becoming a “constitutional county”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - - The Michigan Federation of College Democrats denounce and are disappointed by the actions of the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners actions on Tuesday to make Ottawa County a “constitutional county.”

In November, voters outlined a clear path they wish to see our state go in. Our Governor and Legislature have worked to ensure that the path is being followed. To prevent further deaths at the hands of guns, recent statewide legislation passed through the constitutional process would have prevented deadly firearms in the hands of people who present a danger to themselves or others.

Ottawa County’s blatant refusal to enforce necessary legislation in order to prevent further tragedies is deeply troubling in a time of such instability and fear among Michigan’s citizens. Nobody, especially on our college campuses, should be afraid about their safety.

The Board’s actions showcase nothing more than the dangerous rhetoric that has taken over Ottawa County.
